Just learnt the simplest trick with those **** mosquitoes: Wet your hand before you start swatting and add 50% to your effectiveness.

One unexpected benefit about living in Johor is that you get to come upon manufacturers of such useful things for charity fundraising or corporate gifts. I’m sure you yawn at some kitschy thing and long for a really useful item, specially if you have to pay for it. I personally love umbrellas as they are always being lent to people who never return them, and it’s a bit cheap to ask for it back.

Try this place for well-made, affordable and your-design umbrellas: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

These few days have been hopeless for crabs: full moon so recently, Mothers’ Day family outings … last night a good restaurant was charging RM115 a kilo, and that is before cooking, so we will just wait.

Friends who ask about our cable TV programmes … we get just about everything that is available in Singapore. But we do not get Fox News (though we get Fox Entertainment) and S’pore does not get Al Jazeera. Innumerable kopi tiams in Johor show Channel 8 TV, and in S’pore, some kopi tiams show TV3.

So nice not to be suffering intense heat or freezing cold, and the rain is a freely watering the gardens daily.  Deo gratias.

Is buying a property in Johor a good investment?

Apart from a huge improvement in quality of life if you also live here – also an arguable point if you thrive best in a bustling city or must have hot nightlife most nights, or must be less than 20 minutes from your office – this is really the question.

Why did we move from Singapore to Johor?

Because in Singapore we could not afford to buy a house with land to grow fruit trees and vegetables and have space for our dog to run free. Our simple two-storied bungalow in Johor within the IDR is on 9000 square feet of land and cost us less than a 4-room HDB found in a good location.
